A well-established design consultancy operating across the Carolinas is seeking an experienced Civil Engineering Team Leader to join their North Carolina operations. This is a direct-hire, senior leadership role in which your primary focus shifts from individual project delivery to guiding and growing a civil engineering team — driving technical quality, financial performance, and the professional development of the people you lead.
What you'll do
- Directly supervise one or more Project Managers along with their supporting staff, providing day-to-day direction, coaching, and performance feedback
- Cultivate a team culture grounded in accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement — setting clear expectations and empowering staff to advance professionally
- Conduct regular one-on-ones, develop individual growth plans, and complete performance evaluations to support career progression and succession planning
- Participate in recruiting, onboarding, and integrating new team members while identifying ongoing training and staffing needs
- Oversee project quality from planning through closeout, ensuring thorough QA/QC reviews are completed ahead of every major deliverable
- Support Project Managers on technically complex challenges, including regulatory hurdles, agency feedback, contractor coordination, and construction administration activities
- Track project schedules, budgets, scope, and risk across the team's portfolio — stepping in early when issues arise to prevent escalation
- Allocate work across the team based on capacity, expertise, and development goals, and coordinate resource-sharing with other team leaders and office leadership
- Review team financial performance including work-in-progress, profitability, billing, and accounts receivable — coaching Project Managers on budget stewardship and identifying additional service opportunities
- Build and maintain strong client relationships, joining project discussions where senior leadership involvement adds value
- Contribute to business development through proposal strategy, networking, client outreach, and participation in professional organizations
What you'll bring
- A four-year degree in civil engineering from a recognized college or university
- Ten or more years of progressively responsible experience in civil engineering or land development consulting, with a track record spanning project management, team leadership, client stewardship, and financial accountability
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is strongly preferred
- Proven ability to mentor, coach, and develop Project Managers and technical staff
- Working knowledge of the full land development lifecycle — including regulatory permitting, coordination with public agencies, and construction administration
- Strong financial acumen covering project budgets, profitability analysis, billing cycles, and workload forecasting
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills with the ability to engage employees, clients, contractors, and agency representatives effectively
- Strong critical thinking and risk-identification skills; comfortable managing multiple priorities and competing deadlines
- Competency with Microsoft 365 and relevant civil engineering software platforms
- Willingness to travel occasionally to project sites, client meetings, and other office locations
