A fast-growing independent renewable energy developer is seeking a senior in-house attorney to own legal support across its utility-scale solar, battery storage, and wind construction and procurement activities. Based in San Mateo, California, this is a high-autonomy role reporting to the General Counsel and working closely with cross-functional teams throughout the full project lifecycle.

What you'll do

  • Take the lead on drafting, negotiating, and administering engineering, procurement, and construction contracts alongside equipment purchase and long-term operations and maintenance agreements covering the company's renewable energy portfolio.
  • Counsel internal teams — spanning construction, asset management, development, and finance — on risk allocation, change order management, notices, claims, and dispute resolution at every stage of a project.
  • Advise on contracting strategy for large-scale equipment sourcing and construction packages, including the structuring of warranty regimes and performance guarantees.
  • Identify and allocate tariff and trade-policy risks within equipment supply arrangements.
  • Guide internal stakeholders on contract provisions that intersect with federal clean energy tax incentives, including rules around domestic content, prevailing wage and apprenticeship obligations, foreign entity of concern restrictions, and related compliance requirements.
  • Manage relationships with and work product of outside legal counsel on relevant matters, balancing cost efficiency against business priorities.
  • Collaborate with project finance and tax equity legal teams on construction-phase conditions precedent, lender diligence requirements, and related contractual deliverables.
  • Partner cross-functionally to develop and maintain standardised contract templates, playbooks, and internal processes that reflect the company's commercial risk appetite.
  • Provide periodic support on mergers and acquisitions due diligence, early-stage project development, and broader corporate and commercial matters as business needs dictate.

What you'll bring

  • JD from an accredited law school and a valid licence to practise law in the United States; admission in California or New York is advantageous.
  • At least ten years of hands-on experience structuring, negotiating, and managing EPC, procurement, and operations and maintenance contracts for utility-scale renewables — specifically solar photovoltaic, battery energy storage, and/or wind generation.
  • Thorough understanding of U.S. renewable energy tax credit frameworks (ITC/PTC under the relevant Internal Revenue Code sections) and how associated compliance requirements flow into construction and supply contracts.
  • Working knowledge of tariff exposure and trade-policy risk as they affect renewable energy equipment supply chains.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with significant independence, applying commercially grounded legal judgement to complex risk and negotiation questions.
  • Capability to manage multiple concurrent transactions across different asset types in a lean, high-paced environment.
  • Clear and effective communicator with internal business partners at all levels as well as external counterparties and outside counsel.
  • Exposure to M&A diligence or early-stage renewable project development is a plus.

  • Annual performance bonus tied to individual and company results.
